The Investing Week Ahead: 2/21/22

Join me as I highlight the most important topics to attack the investing week ahead.

Happy Presidents’ Day! We’re officially zipping through February. Here’s to hoping that you’re spending the day hanging on the couch or taking in some sunshine.

The podcast episode with Creative Juice’s co-founder and CEO Sima Gandhi is now live, consider giving it a listen here.

Also — I paid a visit to my local Aritzia store here in Nashville, TN yesterday.

I spoke with one of their sales managers and she told me Aritzia’s corporate headquarters upgraded their store’s status from a “B+” to an “A+” given the immense sales momentum they’ve seen since opening in November.

Let’s jump into everything you need to look out for this week!

In this post, we’ll cover:

  • Quarterly financial reports worth reading

  • Investor events to keep an eye on

  • Major economic releases

  • Event-driven winners

The Investing Week Ahead - Too Long, Didn’t Read:

Home Depot, Lowe’s, Mercadolibre, Palo Alto Networks, Monday.com, Alibaba, and many more step up to bat, the CAGNY Conference will give insight into how the supply chain impacts getting food on our tables, Mark Zuckerberg is set to give an ‘AI in the Metaverse’ speech after being ridiculed for his ‘Metamates’ lingo, PMI data gives us insights into the manufacturing and services sectors, and all eyes remain on the Russia-Ukraine invasion.

Key Earnings Announcements:

During this abbreviated week in the markets, many retailers lead the way. They’re followed by stocks we often analyze like Block, Coinbase, Intuit, and Opendoor.

Questions we’re asking:

Investor Events:

The spotlight is on consumer staple stocks at the CAGNY Conference, as they present on profitability and supply chain issues.

  • Tuesday - Friday (2/22 - 2/25): Consumer Analyst Group of New York (CAGNY) 2022 Conference

  • Wednesday (2/23): Cummins’ (CMI) First Investor Day in Years, Xerox (XRX) Investor Day

CAGNY Conference presenters include:

Coca-Cola | General Mills | JM Smucker | Kraft Heinz | Mondelez International | Philip Morris | Sysco Corp

Major Economic Updates:

After a horrendous CPI reading in mid-February, economists look to the PMI for better insights as to how deep inflation has spread in our manufacturing and services sectors.

Tuesday (2/22): Home Price Index, Consumer Confidence PMI, Markit Manufacturing PMI, Markit Services PMI

Thursday (2/24): Jobless Claims Update, New Home Sales

Friday (2/25): Consumer Spending, Durable Goods Orders, PCE Inflation, Personal Income

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine looming, the economic strength of the US could be tested even deeper than it has over the past couple of years. For example, a friend of mine works for a major car rental conglomerate. He told me that the company’s C-Suiters warned of oil prices rising much higher and impacting their business model in a drastic ways.

We’ll make sure to pay close attention to what the broader economic data could be telling us, and how it may impact our favorite stocks.

Events-Driven Winners:

What specific events are moving the markets most?

Our friends at LevelFields took the time to scrub through thousands of data points and determine how events impacted stock prices last week. It’s a killer platform for catching trading opportunities as they arise.

This info may help you with forming your swing trading theses this week (if that’s your thing), or simply seeing what actions cause stocks to jump! Absolutely insane moves by UPST (broken down here), HSUN, and FTK.
