When it comes to the Why Now? behind this pick, two particular headlines caught my attention this week. One was deleting a cloud customer’s account and data, and the other was the rise of ransomware.

Google got in hot water last week when it deleted the entire cloud infrastructure of a $125B Australian pension fund! But don’t worry; the customer also had another Google backup. Oh wait… that got deleted too. The saving grace here is that the customer also had backups with a (different) additional cloud service provider. This means that data loss was “minimized” but still not avoided, causing a massive headache for the company.

Additionally, it seems that every week or so, we receive news of a data breach or ransomware attack. A ransomware attack is a cyber attack in which malicious software (malware) encrypts the victim's data or locks them out of their systems. The attacker then demands a ransom payment from the victim in exchange for the decryption key or access to the system. Not only are these attacks becoming more prevalent, they are also becoming more expensive:
