EARNINGS: Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs saw a significant earnings boost in the second quarter, thanks to strong performance from its trading unit. Both fixed-income and equity traders surpassed expectations, and a recovering capital markets business further improved results.

However, Goldman earned fewer fees from arranging mergers than JPMorgan Chase. This is notable since Goldman usually leads in this area. Second-quarter earnings were 2.5 times higher than last year, with a net income of $3.04 billion on $12.7 billion in revenue. Fixed-income trading generated $3.18 billion, while stock trading earned $3.17 billion. Investment banking revenue fell short of estimates at $1.73 billion.

Acquisition: Google and Wiz

Google is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire cybersecurity firm Wiz for $23 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Founded in 2020 and led by CEO Assaf Rappaport, Wiz has quickly grown and was valued at $12 billion in May.

Known for its cloud security solutions, Wiz appeals to large firms and is backed by notable investors like Cyberstarts and Sequoia Capital. If finalized, this would be Google’s largest acquisition, highlighting its commitment to cybersecurity amid rising threats.
